The concert ends with Suk's brilliant Serenade for Strings, a brilliant work that owes much to the influence and guidance of Dvorak, his teacher and future father-in-law. 3. RACHMANINOFF MEETS PAGANINI

2.30pm, Sunday, August 18
Christ Church Cathedral
(Finale of the
Newcastle Music Festival)
with
Erin Sweetman (piano)
RACHMANINOFF Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
KILAR Orawa
GROH Intradas (arr Groh)
DAVID BANNEY Sinfonietta

Erin Sweetman joins the Camerata in the 'Rach-Pag' - one of the epics of the piano repertoire. Numerous composers have made sets of variations on Paganini's original melody, including Paganini himself, but none are more popular than Rachmaninoff's brilliant work, which includes one of the greatest tunes of all time in the 18th Variation. The colour of Eastern European music continues in Kilar's marvellous 'Orawa', an evocation of folk fiddlers on the Polish mountains. Also on the program, arrangements by our Principal Violist, Paul Groh, of delightful works by the German Baroque composer, Johann Groh, and a new work by Artistic Director, David Banney.

4. MEDITERRANEAN
2.30pm, Sunday, Nov 17
Christ Church Cathedral

with
David Drury (organ)

RESPIGHI Ancient Airs and Dances
RESPIGHI Suite for Organ and Strings
TURINA La Oracion del Torero
VALENTE La Romanesca
Italian and Spanish flavours saturate this program in music of Respighi, Turina and others. Respighi's Suite for Organ and Strings puts the grand organ of Christ Church Cathedral in the spotlight, in the brilliant hands of David Drury. Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances show the composer's love of early music, but his arrangements are full of his typical energy and colour. In addition to brilliant works with the orchestra, the concert will include organ solos, amongst which is Valente's beautiful La Romanesca.
